Did you get this message today? How to migrate to HTTPS.

Google informed us some time ago that it was going to prioritise HTTPS over HTTP in a bid to meet one of the companies primary goals, making the web a safer place. Since this announcement many sites have migrated from HTTP to HTTPS, a smart move!

This morning Google Webmaster admins will have received an email, similar to the below. This email is informing you that you are recommended to shift to HTTPS sooner rather than later, not only is it a ranking signal for SERPS but it also helps other things, such as conversion optimisation. The security of your site, or, google showing your site as “not secure” will have an impact on your potential customers trust in you, and as a result, will also impact their likelihood to convert to a customer.

Below are some useful steps to follow to migrate to HTTPS…

Step 1: Purchase an SSL certificate. We recommend your purchase one from your domain/hosting provider. NB – Alternatively you could use Cloudflare, they offer SSL certificates for free (shared) or from as little as $5 a month for a dedicated SSL.

Step 2: Ask your provider to install the SSL certificate.

Step 3. Update your Htaccess file. Log on to your websites FTP account and download a copy of the .htaccess file. Open the file and add the following code.

 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
 RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]

That’s it! You will now be running on HTTPs and showing a nice secure authentication to your visitors.
